In 2008, Calgary hosted the Juno Awards for the first time, signaling the city’s growing cultural presence. The success of the event sparked the creation of the “Music Lives Here” brand and a broader vision for a lasting legacy.
Starting in September 2008, Calgary’s professional music community came together to discuss the city's future in music, covering topics like vision, advocacy, education, audience building, and funding. These discussions led to the decision to form an independent association dedicated to supporting Calgary’s music sector.
By April 2009, the organization was officially incorporated as a non-profit under the Government of Alberta Registries Act, complete with bylaws, a board of directors, and a clear mandate.
In 2013, Music Calgary launched its flagship event, SoundOff Summit — an annual showcase and workshop series designed to connect Calgary’s export-ready talent with leading managers, agents, music programmers, and festival buyers from across Canada and internationally. Open to the public, SoundOff fosters industry connections while spotlighting the strength of Calgary’s music community.
